Amidst troubling reports of a declining economy in 2007, including the collapse of the subprime mortgage market, Sawyer Savings Bank continued to grow. The reason for our profitability and strength as an independent institution is due to a conscious decision by the management and Board of Trustees of Sawyer Savings Bank to remain true to our core values; to provide very high quality customer service, and the products that best serve the needs of our customers while protecting their interest at the same time.

The housing boom of the past few years allowed mortgage brokers and some financial institutions to boost profits by lowering the standards for loan qualification. Borrowers were also steered into products that were not in their best interests. As we have learned, many homeowners are now facing foreclosure because they can not afford to make their payments when these loans go through a rate adjustment.

No one benefits when a loan cannot be repaid or a property goes into foreclosure. After 137 years in business, we understand well that true success comes from long term relationships with the local people and businesses we are here to serve. Once we extend a loan, we have entered a partnership. We offer counsel and expertise, and work with our customers, one on one, to ensure that they will be able to repay their loan should they face unexpencted changes in their lives or businesses. Good business practices breed good will.

Being a part of the communities where we operate is also very important to us. Our employees play a vital role in the community by contributing volunteer hours of service, and often initiate bank wide efforts to raise charitable donations for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA. Our Charitable Contributions Committee often supports these efforts through matching gifts. By being part of the fabric of local life, we believe that Sawyer Savings Bank employees are better prepared to understand their customer's needs as well as their concerns. We believe this is why they provide such personalized service.

Excellent customer service also means maintaining our commitment to current technology advances. Our investment in state of the art computer systems allows our customers access to banking through whatever means they choose. The Bank's 24 hour services include ATM's, on-line banking, bill pay, merchant services and telephone banking.
